1. Ecological migration project for poverty alleviation produced remarkable effect in Guizhou.By the end of 2012, 175 of the 176 settlements for ecological migrants in Guizhou had been finished, while 21,893 houses had been built and 34,454 people from 7,790 households had settled there. The plan to build all the 126 settlements in 2013 has been started. By June, 2013, the ecological migration project for poverty alleviation had received an accumulated investment of 3.645 billion yuan and had remarkably improved the living and working conditions of the relocated population.

2. Huoshan section of the Dabie Mountain poverty alleviation highway was started.
The construction of the Huoshan section of the Dabie Mountain Tourism and Poverty Alleviation Highway started on August 9th. The highway is one of the major projects the central government initiated to promote the development of Lu’an Prefecture, part of a revolutionary base before 1949. The 259-kilometer highway has an estimated investment of 2.99 billion yuan, and the section in Huoshan County will be 75 kilometers long with an investment of 1.61 billion yuan.

3. Lantian County pledged to adapt poverty alleviation measures to each household and each rural resident.A meeting was convened in Lantian County, Shaanxi Province on the morning of August 7th to formulate policies to alleviate poverty and develop the local economy in the county. Four measures were proposed, namely, issuing small-sum subsidized poverty alleviation loans, giving aid fund to businesses, establishing a poverty alleviation mutual aid association and designating technical staff specialized in agriculture and forestry to instruct villagers. The measures aimed at helping rural residents who could not leave the countryside to increase income. The principle of “adapting poverty alleviation measures to each household” was proposed, which means a poverty alleviation plan should be made for each household and even each rural resident according to their own conditions. The goal is to develop two or three long-term and profitable industries for each village and guarantee that each household has one or two sources of income.

4. Meeting urged transportation development in contiguous poverty-stricken regions.A meeting aimed at promoting transport construction to reduce poverty in contiguous poor regions with particular difficulties was held in Guiyang currently. In line with the spirit of the Eighteenth National Congress of the CPC and the instruction of the central conference on poverty alleviation and development, the meeting proposed that the Ministry of Communications and the province should work together to further accelerate the development of transportation and communications in contiguous poverty-stricken areas, so that the objectives set for the 12th Five-Year Plan period will be achieved and a solid foundation will be laid for the poverty alleviation work during the 13th Five-Year Plan period and for realizing the goal of building a moderately well-off society nationwide.

5. “Combating-Poverty Unions”: multiple ways to reduce poverty.Hailun, a county level city in Heilongjiang Province, is a state level poverty-stricken city (county), and has 58,000 able-bodied poor women. To help these women get rid of poverty, the municipal women’s federation created “Combating-Poverty Unions,” a new poverty alleviation mechanism. What distinguishes the new mechanism from old ones, which mostly involve “one to one” aid, is that it adopts “one helps many” and “many help many” and is thus effective in lifting women out of poverty collectively. Up to now, Hailun Municipal Women’s Federation has established 11 such unions with 563 members, who have all been lifted out of poverty.

6. Tourism and poverty reduction turned Yamian into a new village.Yamian, a village in Dahua County, Guangxi Autonomous Region, has been devoted to ecological construction as a way to promote tourism. The village is building a waterside sightseeing zone and promoting an image of green countryside. Thirty households have built biogas digesters to fully utilize bio energy and reduce the burning of firewood. The air is clearer and the ecology is protected. Yamian has been named a countryside tourism model village in Dahua County.
