    Premier Li Keqiang stressed the importance of poverty reduction whenmeeting with United Nations official. Premier Li Keqiang met with Helen Clark,UN Under Secretary General and Administrator of the United Nations Development
    Programme (UNDP) on May 4 in the Zhongnanhai leadership compound. Li said that China was ready to work with other countries, on the basis of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to map out a blueprint for the world’s development in the coming 15 years, and increase efforts in poverty reduction.

    keynote speech for the American Symposium of the World Forum on China Studies. Cui also said that China’s reform and opening-up is the most significant step in modern Chinese history and one that has an impact on the entire world.

    Local Poverty Alleviation News:
    Nearly 170,000 people living in border counties of Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have been lifted out of poverty with the implementation of effective poverty alleviation projects benefiting more impoverished people. Since 2014, the Xinjiang government has been carrying out targeted poverty alleviation measures, including the implementation of over 100 poverty alleviation projects with the support of a poverty alleviation fund worth 170 million yuan. As a result, around 167,000 people living in border counties received direct benefits last year, and their living standards were raised above the poverty line.In 17 border counties, the poverty incident rate dropped from 18.9% to 6.2%.Meanwhile, the per capita net income of farmers and herdsmen reached 6,937 yuan,increased by 1,037 yuan, or 17.6% compared with 2013.

    Nearly 6,000 Tibetan students from low income families have had access to college education thanks to the “Autumn Student Subsidy” program. Since the program was launched 13 years ago by the Tibet Autonomous Region Federation of
    Trade Unions, a total of 15.0595 million yuan has been raised to fund 5,931 students from low-income families (574 of them are children of migrant workers) to go to college.

    A central finance poverty alleviation fund worth 80 million yuan will be injected into Zhenning Autonomous County, Guizhou Province, in an effort to lift it out of poverty. According to statistics, Zhenning Autonomous County attracted
    156 million yuan from the poverty alleviation funds provided by the Central government and Qingdao City (which has committed itself to the poverty reduction of Guizhou Province under arrangements by the State), and 92.8828 million yuan as poverty alleviation through industrial development fund from 2011 to 2014. After Zhenning was designated as a “Model County for Poverty Alleviation in Guizhou” this year, the provincial Poverty Alleviation and Development Office has decided to allocate 80 million yuan out of the central finance poverty alleviation fund to lift the County out of poverty in 2016 through targeted poverty alleviation measures.

    in poverty-stricken areas, special enrollment quota for outstanding rural students and enrollment of local rural students to key universities within the province, so as to give students from poverty-stricken areas more opportunity to enter college.

    Gansu Province plans to renovate dilapidated houses for 140,000 rural families this year. Promoting dilapidated rural house renovation has been an important part of the poverty alleviation efforts of Gansu Province. Since 2009,
    impoverished rural households in the province have enjoyed considerably better living conditions. Around 5.2 million families have moved to new homes or had their houses renovated.
